Jan. 25, 2012 Comic Update

The newest 30 Days of Night came out today and I can say I nearly fell off my treadmill (yes I read comics or novels when I work out, makes the time go by much faster).  I have always been a Steve Niles fan girl (see previous link to his website), but one of the things I like about him (besides his no nonsense take on horror and none sparkly vampires) is he isn't afraid to take risks with his characters.  Also see his series of Criminal Macabre, same thing, lots of ass kicking and violence.

My second pick this week is Rachel Rising (again see links below), I wasn't sure were this was going, I kept reading and hung on and this week paid off.  For sure the best issue in the series so far.  I am glad I stuck it out with this one.

The next series, is Game of Thrones, I am a HUGE fan of these novels, I think they are the best series of books I have ever read, and I always have a book or two on the go.  The comics are wonderfully drawn and capture the spirit of the books.  Note: I loved the tv series as well and look forward to season two in April!

The ongoing Walking Dead series was the fourth read on the treadmill today, I love this series (see previous posts about the comics vs the show).  If you read the series ya know what I am talking about, if you have only see the AMC show... my god go read the comics!

I still have this weeks I, Vampire and Infestation 2 to read, but I had to get off the treadmill and make dinner and so on... will post about them later.

Happy reading!

My comic picks of 2011

So first of all ouch, been several months since my last post... I should probably work on that in the new year, hey there we go a resolution!

I thought I would post about some of my favourite comics from 2011.

- Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead, poor poor Rick, things just do not get any better for this guy.  I wont give anything away, since some probably have only watched the TV show.  I have read all the comics and was reading them before the show came out.  The comics are better then the show, but the show is good and enjoyable.  They are loosely following the comic story, but already someone is dead who shouldn't be and someone who is supposed to be dead, isn't.  Will leave it at that!

- Brandon Seifert's Witch Doctor - I loved this series, it is gross and funny and just really enjoyable. Looking forward to a one shot next week! Go Penny Dreadful GO!

- Steve Niles returns to 30 Days of Night... This series will continue on to the new year, but nice to see him return to the series.  None Sparkly Vampires.. all you need to know!

- Steve Niles - Criminal Macabre, there was a really big reveal a few months ago in this series, part horror, part sleuth and part humour, how can you resist the sarcastic antics of the the drug addicted, alcoholic private 'dick'?

- Joe Benitez's Lady Meckanika - After a 6 month wait, issue 3 finally just hit the shelves, yay!  A steampunk comic with amazingly beautiful artwork has me hooked.  Part machine, part Lady our hero tries to figure out her past and who made her what she is...

- Rachel Rising - Terry Moore's newest gift.  Issue 4 just came out and I am no closer to figuring out what exactly is going on, a girl is killed, and raises from the dead.  We don't know why or who killed her (or do we) then there is that creepy ass kid.. what is up with her...

- Locke and Key by Joe Hill I am late to the game on this one as it has been running for ages, but I read a promo one shot and then picked up the first bound set and it is pretty damn cool.  Hard to describe in a brief blog, so check out the site and have a look.  Or better yet go to your comic shop and see if they have the $1 one shot (yes $1, so you can't go wrong)

If you don't have a local shop, try http://www.tfaw.com/ they have a great selection and awesome customer service.

Now all of these are pretty much adult and horror, want something fun but pretty G rated? Check out the web comic, Modest Medusa, by Jake Richmond.  This was a kickstarter project I supported and I can't wait for my hard copy of this comic to arrive.  It is a really cute and fun comic.

That's it for now.  Happy reading, let me know if anyone has any horror recommendations.

Oh and Happy New Year!
